Hey There Delilah, Chapter 1

Chapter 1,
6 Days after prologue
6/29/07

Beep. Beep, beep. Beep. I turned my head, blindly searching for my alarm clock to shut it off. “Uuuggghhhmmph,” I groaned.
I slowly opened my eyes, still groping around trying to find the source of the beeping. My bedroom wasn’t like I remembered it. Where had my night table gone? In its place was a large machine with a monitor covered in squiggly green lines. Where my pile of last week’s laundry should have been was a large mass of colorful balloons and a dozen stuffed animals. One of the balloon’s read “Get Well Soon!” and a giant purple teddy bear was holding an over-sized card covered in a bunch of signatures. What was going on? Where was all my stuff? Why did it smell like----
“Good morning sunshine!” said a sugary voice. I quickly looked around. The voice seemed to be coming from a young looking blonde woman with a clipboard in her hands. Her perfectly manicured fingers were gripping a bright pink pen that was whizzing across her paper. It made my head hurt. “Are you feeling any better?”
“Better?” I said, puzzled. “I was never bad! Why would I be---” All of a sudden everything came back to me. The graduation day dance, the thunderstorm, Delilah’s smiling face right before the car crash, everything. My head suddenly felt very heavy. I looked at the nurse and said, “Where’s Delilah?”
“I’m sorry honey but---“

“Where’s Delilah?” I said in a quiet, firm voice.
"Honey, she's.....gone."

What do you think of the story so far? Have any suggestions? Leave a comment and check back in next week for Chapter 2!!!

Book List-January

The genre for January is classics. I know they can be boring sometimes, but some of them are really good! (And I need to read them for English class! ;) So, here are a couple of titles to get you started. Each week I will feature another book with a brief summary. Enjoy!

Title: Anne of Green Gables
Author: L. M. Montgomery
Rating: * * *
Notes: This book is kind of long and pretty hard to get into, but it get's better. (The movie is better!)

Title: Gone with the Wind
Author: Margaret Mitchell
Rating: * * * * and a half
Notes: Set against the backdrop of Georgia during the Civil War, Mitchell’s massive historical novel chronicles the tempestuous romance of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara.* (Great movie as well!)

Title: The Great Gatsby
Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald
Rating: * * * *
Notes: Jay Gatsby has built an illegal empire to win the love of Daisy Buchanan, but his sacrifices for her prove to be his downfall.*

* These notes compliments of my English teacher

Riddle for 12/31-1/6

Last week's answer was:
"Each person paid $9 equaling $27 total and then you MINUS the $2 that the bellhop took and you get the $25 that should have been paid."
This week's riddle is:
"The man who invented it doesn't want it. The man who bought it doesn't need it. The man who needs it doesn't know it. What is it?"

Hey There Delilah Prologue

Check out the prologue of The Weekly Harold's first story, Hey There Delilah.

“Hurry up Jolie! It’s pouring!” my best friend called out to me through the maze of raindrops falling all around us.
“Hold on! This stupid umbrella won’t open!” I fiddled with the darn thing for a few more seconds, until I decided to give up. “My mom is gonna kill me!” I mumbled as I hurried along side Delilah. My blue silk dress was already dripping with sweet rainwater and we had only gotten out of the school auditorium three minutes earlier. I could feel my feet slowly sliding out of my new strappy black sandals. I scrunched up my toes, praying they would stay on.
“Come on! I can see my mom’s car up ahead! Just across the street in the extra school parking lot!” A huge clap of thunder sounded above our heads, closely followed by a streak of lighting as we dashed into the street. The storm was quickly growing worse. The lightning lit up the night sky and Delilah’s smiling face. At least I thought it was lightning.
It happened so suddenly. Delilah’s smile quickly faded as her face turned an eery orange in the flood of headlights. I turned around just in time to see the car come racing towards us. The last thing I remember was the long, drawn out beep of a car horn and the flashing red and blue lights of a siren…

Riddle for 12/23-12/30

This week's riddle:
"Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go?"
Hmmmm...?

Snowtime White

I wake up on a silent winter day
to find my world covered in white
The trees have put on sparkling masks
Covering up their fright

The grass is gone,
the pond is too
My steps are covered
in this dazzling dew

I slip on my boots and hat and coat
grab my mittens too
The ground is icey and the cold bites my nose,
but I don't mind, do you?

I open my book and start my work
what I really came out here to complete
I pick a color, cucumber green
and paint the grass with ease

The driveway returns to its normal gray
with a quick flick of my magic wand
The front door is then painted deep blood red
and deep sea blue the pond

By the time day breaks
I feel I am done
From the moon to the stars,
the clouds to the sun

My world is not white anymore
Not lost in a world of wonder
Now everything is just as should be
Everything is the right color

My Pyramid/Tracker

At this time of year when all the holiday goodies get to you, you say to yourself "My New Year's Resolution will be to lose some weight and stay on a diet." Unfortuneately just saying it isn't going to do anything. If you want to stay healthy this holiday season and ultimately for life, go to these government sponsered websites:

http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov/default.htm
This webpage lets you write down what you eat daily, and then tells you if you were right on track with your healthy kick, or if you need to keep working. Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and click on New User Registration. Completely safe to sign up!

http://www.mypyramid.gov/mypyramid/index.aspx
This webpage shows you exactly what you should be eating according to your age, height, weight, and daily physical activity. Helpful!

Good luck and I hope you stick to it, just like me! (I might just put up a reminder every once and a while for those of you that decide to use these sites.)

"Hey There Delilah" Preview

Below is the preview for The Weekly Harold's story "Hey There Delilah". It may be kind of confusing now, but when you read the prologue on Christmas Eve, it will all make sense.

Has something ever happened to you that changed your life forever? Did you wake up the next morning hoping it was all a dream? And then the giant wave of pain and guilt crashes down on you when you realize that it actually happened. That feeling can make you melt. Inside and out. Maybe I'm still staring into her face, watching Delilah smile for the last time. I don't know. Time has passed but it's stood still. This is my story and I want you to listen...

Remember- CHRISTMAS EVE="hEY tHERE dELILAH pROLOGUE"!

Snow-day Ideas

Yay! NO SCHOOL! You want to know why? Because I slept with a wooden spoon under my pillow! I'm not really sure if that's what did it, but anyways, here are some cool ideas if you get bored today. (This post is for Betty! You go girl!)

  • Fill a cup with snow and add your desired amount of maple syrup. So good!
  • Take a spray bottle full of water and food coloring and spray-paint the snow. This can look really awesome!
  • If you have a fire place today is the perfect day to use it! Build a fire, get a cozy blanket, and make some s'mores! Mmmmmmmm.....!
  • Get creative with your snowman. Maybe you could make a snowwoman, cat, dog, or even a big snow tiger! You can use the spray bottles from your graffiti project to paint your snow creations!
  • Have a cookie baking party! Invite a couple of friends over and tell them to bring their favorite cookie recipe. Before the day is over you'll have enough cookies for the whole neighborhood!

Have any good snow-day ideas? Let me know! I'm bored!

This week's question is:
"Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."

To celebrate this new tradition, I want to hear about YOUR holiday traditions. Do you hide a pickle in your tree? Do you do a Secret Candle for Hannukah? I want to know!!! My personl Christmas tradition is every year when we buy our Christmas tree, we get a bit of the end cut off. We write something big that happened that year on one side, and the actual year on the other. Then we hang all of the little discs on a smaller tree in our dining room for all to see! Pretty neat, huh?

Music and Lyrics: Week of 11/25

Over You by Daughtry

Now that it’s all said and done
I can’t believe you were the one
To build me up and tear me down
Like an old abandoned house
What you said when you left
Just left me cold and out of breath
I fell too far, was in way too deep
Guess I let you get the best of meeee

[Chorus]Well I never saw it coming
I should have started running
A long, long time agooo!
And I never thought I’d doubt you
I’m better off without you
More than you, more than you know
I’m slowly getting closure
I guess it’s really overI’m finally gettin’ better
Now I’m picking up the pieces
From spending all of these years
Putting my heart back together
‘Cause the day I thought I’d never get through
I got over you!!!

You took a hammer to these walls
Dragged the memories down the hall
Packed your bags and walked away
There was nothing I could say,
And when you slammed the front door shut
A lot of other’s opened up
So did my eyes so I could see
That you never were the best for meee

[Chorus]Well I never saw it coming
I should have started running
A long, long time agooo!
And I never thought I’d doubt you
I’m better off without you
More than you, more than you know
I’m slowly getting closure
I guess it’s really over
I’m finally gettin’ better
Now I’m picking up the pieces
From spending all of these years
Putting my heart back together
‘Cause the day I thought I’d never get through
I got over you!!!

I never saw it coming
I should have started running
A long, long time agooo
And I never thought I’d doubt you
I’m better off without you
And I never saw it coming
I should have started running
I’m finally getting better
Now I’m picking up the pieces
From spending all of these years
Putting my heart back together

And I got over you!!!
And I got over you!!!
And I got over you!!!
The day I thought I’d never get through
I got over you…

Send Me Your Favorite Book Titles!!!

Many of my "Weekly Harold" fans have been commenting about the "Book List". This is great!!! More than one person has suggested that I add a specific book to the list, so here it is:

Title: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
Author: Avi
Rating:* * * * & a 1/2

I must say that I have never actually read this book myself, but the four and a half stars that it received has me convinced! If you have read a fantastic book like this, please tell me about it so I can add it to my list of books.

I thought it would be a good idea to have a genre of the month. Until December, send me any book titles that you want! But after that I will be asking for a specific genre. Please send me any good books that you know of in this chosen genre. (WARNING: GENRE WILL BE REVEALED ON 11/26!) I hope you like this idea!
Harold;)
P.S. You can still send me book titles that are not in the monthly genre, but I cannot promise that they will make it on the list, but they will be available for people to read in the "Book List" comments section.

New Riddle!!!

The answer to the first riddle was:
All of the children are boys, so of course half of them are!

Here is the next riddle:

A boy was at a carnival and went to a booth where a man said to the boy, "If I write your exact weight on this piece of paper then you have to give me $50, but if I cannot, I will pay you $50."The boy looked around and saw no scale so he agrees, thinking no matter what the carny writes he'll just say he weighs more or less. In the end the boy ended up paying the man $50. How did the man win the bet?

PLAIN WHITE T'S LYRICS"Hey There Delilah"

Hey there Delilah

What's it like in New York City?
I'm a thousand miles away
But girl, tonight you look so pretty
Yes you do
Times Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear it's true

Hey there Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it's my disguise
I'm by your side

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me

Hey there Delilah
I know times are getting hard
But just believe me, girl
Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar
We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good

Hey there Delilah
I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I'd write it all
Even more in love with me you'd fall
We'd have it all

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me

A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they've got planes and trains and cars
I'd walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
and we'll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way
Delilah I can promise you
That by the time we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you're to blame

Hey there Delilah
You be good and don't you miss me
Two more years and you'll be done with school
And I'll be making history like I do
You'll know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to

Hey there Delilah here's to you
This ones for you
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me.
